In the year 2000, God called J. Tracy Graham to leave his business life as a CPA, CFP to join the ministry team at Broadmoor Baptist Church as Minister of Evangelism. After a few years on staff God began to give Tracy and Danna Graham, our pastor and his wife, the vision for a community based church where individuals and families would be radically transformed by the incredible love of Christ through loving, close-knit, Christ exalting community. Over the next few years, God began to slowly bring about this vision and in December 2005, Broadmoor Baptist Church, under the leadership of Dr. Chuck Pourciau and Dr. Tom Harrison, voted very generously to help support the planting of a new, community-based church in South Shreveport.
In September of 2005, God called out eight members of Broadmoor Baptist Church to join the church planting effort and together, the ten of them embarked on their journey of faith. This core team of ten adults began meeting in the pastor's living room with the goal of being a community that glorified our Lord by being faithful to His Word. In November 2005, they added Sunday worship services, also in the living room, with six children adding excitement to their worship until the youngest would leave for Bible stories at the start of the sermon. From the very beginning they knew God was up to something special.
In December 2005, a group of fourteen adults with children, moved their ministry to "The Market." Unlimited coffee and cappuccino from the grocery side encouraged thirty minutes of fellowship before moving to the restaurant side for the worship service. Reflecting their desire to strengthen families, they continued to include all children in worship with the youngest leaving for Bible stories at the start of the sermon. Now that's ministry in the "market."
Originally the plans were to plant the church within the new Provenance development on Southern Loop but over time God had revealed another plan to the core team. In December 2005, this small core team consisting of fourteen adults, was able to option a prime piece of real estate for their future church site at the intersection of Norris Ferry Road and Southern Loop. Upon securing this option the team decided to adopt the name Norris Ferry Community Church. God proved at this early date that He is a God of unlimited resources. God provided the land through the generous support of Broadmoor Baptist Church, Southern Baptist Agencies, and the core team; enabling the purchase of the land without encumbering one penny of the operating budget of the church.
In November 2006, Norris Ferry Community Church had grown to five community groups with over twenty members and around fifty attenders and had moved again. They were meeting in an auditorium inside the Glen Retirement Village and continued to grow. While at the Glen, the growth came in the form of young families with lots of young kids. They quickly realized they needed to move again and to begin praying for a building on their property in God's perfect timing.
In August of 2007 they moved to South Highlands Magnet on Erie where there were lots of classrooms and playgrounds for the kids – not to mention a brand new 550 seat Performing Arts Center with plenty of room to grow. The church continued to enjoy growth both spiritually and numerically. Eager to get back to the target geographic area they began to pray they would be able to build a church building on their property in the Norris Ferry Community. In January of 2008 the church voted to break ground as soon as they were financially able to build with a responsible level of debt – if any. Only one month later the Lord had provided the needed financial pledges.
In September of 2008 they broke ground and construction moved at a frantic pace finishing up just in time to have the first worship service on April 12, 2009 – Easter Sunday! God was so faithful on that first Easter Sunday that every seat in the house was full and many had to watch the service on television in the coffee shop. What a great day! The church has seen steady growth since the opening of the building finally realizing their dream with many new people coming from the surrounding neighborhoods. They are filling up every classroom with children and are teaching God's word in every corner.
As of August 2011 they continue to see the Lord bringing a steady stream of new guests worshiping in two services and 150 adult covenant members, all of whom are committed to connecting in community, growing spiritually, serving on a service team, and leading others to do the same. It is truly amazing to see the majesty and glory of God displayed through a bunch of imperfect people extending the grace of God to each other as they strive to help each other live faithfully. Now that they are out of space again they are planning and praying God will provide them with their facility needs and begin to fulfill their dreams of becoming a church planting center which plants similar churches all throughout the world. This exciting journey continues and you are invited to join in the journey!
